Woodstock, VT is the county seat of Windsor County, Vermont (nighttime population: 3,200) Woodstock is located approximately 2 to 3 hours from greater Boston, 5 hours to New York City, 2 to 3 hours from Hartford International Airport, and 4 hours from Montreal. Woodstock also is served by Hartness State Airport in nearby Springfield VT and Burlington International Airport. The Lebanon Municipal Airport in West Lebanon NH is also convenient to Woodstock. Chartered in 1761, Woodstock hosted the Vermont General Assembly in 1807 before the Assembly located permanently to Montpelier in 1808. The town settled in 1768 and, after the American Revolution, grew as an industrial mill town on the Ottauquechee River. Woodstock’s mills and factories produced farm implements, wool carding machines, flour, wool, guns, furniture, carriages, harnesses, saddles and other leather goods. The Woodstock Railroad completed work and opened its line to White River Junction in 1875. Today, tourism is central to the Woodstock economy. Woodstock’s village green is not only picturesque and beautiful all year round – it is also one of the most photographed locations in all of United States advertising. |
Surrounded by farming communities, Woodstock’s restaurants enjoy access to the freshest produce. Some of its best restaurants include the Osteria, Bentley’s, and The Prince and The Pauper. Woodstock sponsors the Woodstock Antique Auto Show in May and the Woodstock Covered Bridge Half Marathon in June. Other attractions include the Mt. Tom Farmers Market (Saturday mornings, 9:30 to 12:30) … Trap Shooting at the Woodstock Gun Club (open to the public Tuesday and Thursday evenings beginning 5:30 p.m.) … the Billings Farm and Museum – a working dairy farm celebrating Vermont’s rural traditions (May through October, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). When you’re in town, drop in on the Clear Lake Furniture Makers Showroom on Elm Street and Sugarbush Farms, which features artisan cheeses, maple syrup, other farm products. Golfers have many opportunities to find a tee time in Woodstock -- at Billings Farm, Woodstock Six, or the Woodstock Country Club. |
