Stowe VT (pop. 4,300) is located in Lamoille County, VT in the heart of central Vermont’s mountains. Stowe is a year-round destination for active outdoor travelers. Approximate driving time to Stowe from Montreal is about 2.5 hours … from Boston, 3.5 hours … from New York City, 6 hours … from Bradley International Airport (Hartford), 3.5 hours and from Burlington International Airport, 1 hour. The state airport in nearby Morrisville serves the town of Stowe Vermont. During the 1930’s, Franklin Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps hired unemployed workers to carve out ski trails, build roads, and improve access to Mt. Mansfield. Because of these improvements, Stowe, Vermont became a downhill ski destination. Today, tourism is the number one driver of Stowe's economy, and the lodges, shops and restaurants of the Stowe ski area are the town’s largest employer. The Trapp Family Lodge (think Sound of Music) is not only an important inn, it is also a major tourist attraction and one of many venues for the Vermont Mozart Festival. Because of the ski area, some manufacturing has originated in Stowe. But, as has happened in many American light manufacturing towns, small companies like Tubbs Snowshoe packed up their operations and moved them to China. Looking for things to do in Stowe VT? The Vermont Ski Museum celebrates Vermont’s skiers. One especially inspiring exhibit tells the story of the 10th Mountain Division, organized in November 1941 with 1,000 men, many of them Vermonters. Part of the 5th Army, the 10th Division ranks swelled to three regiments and more than 33,000 men by the end of the World War II. The 10th shipped out to the |
Mediterranean theater, moved into Italy’s Apennines, and cut off enemy supply routes. Their heroism shut down the Italian front and changed the tide of World War II. If you’re interested in hiking in Vermont, Smugglers’ Notch State Park is a perfect destination. Smugglers’ Notch got its name when Thomas Jefferson embargoed American trade with Great Britain and Canada, and Vermonters responded by moving cattle and other goods through the notch into Montreal. Before the Civil War, the Notch provided an escape route for fugitive slaves. During Prohibition, smugglers moved Canada whiskey through the Notch, a narrow pass through the Green Mountains lined with 1,000-foot cliffs. Smugglers’ Notch State Park was relocated in 2003, and the original Civilian Conservation Corps structures were restored. If you’re packing clubs, Stowe Country Club and West Hill Golf Course offer fine mountain terrain with great views. For breweries, Vermont is a destination. Vermont brewers have pure waters, cool crisp mountain air, and availability of fresh brewing ingredients (think hops). Add to that the brewing knowledge that comes from generations of producing maple syrup, a distillation process, and you have the ingredients for an excellent brew tour. There's no shortage of good restaurants in Stowe VT. What we like most of all is the variety. A particular favorite: Piecasso... it manages to honor and at the same time make fun of the great twentieth century painter.
