Shelburne, VT (pop. 7,000) is located in Chittenden County on the shores of Lake Champlain. 

Shelburne is located 4 hours to Boston, 5.5 hours to New York City, 2 hours to Montreal, 3 hours to Albany, and 4 hours to Hartford International Airport and 15 minutes from the Burlington International Airport. 

Granite deposits at Millstone Hill were discovered ca. 1815, and a granite boom developed as soon as a railroad line came to town. 

Like many Vermont towns, Shelburne’s economy organized around agriculture, and, when Vermont farmers obtained licenses to breed merino sheep, mills to card wool and produce wool textile products created Shelburne’s manufacturing base.  Shelburne’s ship builders launched many steamboats, including the Ticonderoga, which is on display at the Shelburne Museum.  

 Because agriculture remains an important part of Shelburne life, it has given rise to excellent restaurants featuring local Vermont fare.   Bistro Sauce features seasonal Continental and Vermont cuisine with a

menu showcasing local produce.  Cafe Shelburne’s seasonal menu features contemporary French cuisine and farm fresh products.

The chief attraction in Shelburne is the Shelburne Museum, with its huge collection of American folk art, tools, textiles, toys… American architecture that includes a round barn, a covered bridge and a lighthouse … all of it set on 45 acres in the Vermont countryside. Galleries also exhibit paintings by Grandma Moses, Winslow Homer, Andrew Wyeth, Degas and others.  In summer, the museum offers a full program of workshops in quilts, carpentry, and other arts and crafts.

Also in Shelburne is the Vermont Teddy Bear Factory, America’s leading maker of hand-made teddy bears.
