Putney Vermont was chartered in 1753. Today, its population is 2,700. Putney lies in the Connecticut River Valley in Windham County, the southeastern corner of the state at at Exit 4 of I-91 in Vermont, 9 miles north of Brattleboro and south of Saxtons River and Bellows Falls. Area attractions include Landmark College, Putney Mountain (directly in the flyway of hawks, kestrels and eagles), The Putney School, The Greenwood School, the shell of the fire-ravaged Putney General Store and a vibrant crafts community. Nearby are the School for International Training (Brattleboro), Marlboro College (Marlboro) and Vermont Academy (Saxtons River). Putney is a gateway town in southern Vermont, with a history rooted in agriculture and manufacturing. Today, Putney Vermont has working farms producing apples, berries, maple sugar products, milk, artisan cheeses, fruit wines and other products.... weekend trips to its pick your own apple orchards are a New England September tradition. Driving time to Putney is approximately 3 hours from Boston, 4 hours from New York City, 5 hours from Montreal, 2 hours from Albany, 3 hours from Bradley International Airport (Hartford) and three hours from Burlington International Airport in Burlington VT.

And the Green Mountain Head Rowing Regatta is a major foliage season attraction. Putney Vermont still is rural in character. But its manufacturing base, once agriculture-related, has been replaced by craft studios producing high quality artworks using diverse materials: ceramics, textiles, wood, and glass, to name a few. Music, theater and other cultural attractions are a vital part of Putney Vermont life. Yellow Barn Music Festival (celebrating its 40th anniversary) and Sandglass Theater are two important cultural centers in the town. Putney Vermont is a year-round destination for outdoor sports with excellent hiking trails and cycling loops favored by road and mountain bikers, as well as many fine golf courses to choose from in summer – all within easy driving range. Putney Vermont has fine cross-country ski and snowshoe trails. It is also one of the few towns with a landing on the Connecticut River (fishing by license only). |
