Londonderry VT (pop. 1700) is a Windham County township that includes the village of South Londonderry. Nearby towns are Weston, Windham, Jamaica, Winhall and Landgrove. According to the town web site, Londonderry Vermont was first chartered in 1770 as Kent which then included what is now Windham. The town was again chartered in 1780 as the township of Londonderry by the Vermont legislature. Part of the old town is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as the South Londonderry Village Historic District. Approximate driving time to Londonderry VT is 1.5 hours from Albany NY, 2 hours from Bradley International (Hartford CT) 2.5 hours from Boston MA and Burlington International Airport, 3.5 hours from Portsmouth NH, 4 hours from Montreal QC, and 4.5 hours from New York NY. For most of its history, Londonderry was a small New England mill town, and, because of its manufacturing enterprises, attained a pre-Civil War population of 1,367 souls. By 1960, with few manufacturing jobs, Londonderry had only 900 people on the census rolls. Londonderry’s mills and factories included saw mills, gristmills, machine shops, carriage shops, a tannery, chair stock and marble works. In the nineteenth century, towns in the West River valley promoted development via a rail connection between Jamaica and Brattleboro. In 1880, the West River Railroad Company completed work on the railroad. The Central Vermont Railway Co. operated the railroad until 1927. |
Summer vacationers and winter skiers brought Londonderry back to life as a New England recreational destination, and they brought back its population, too. Today, Londonderry Vermont hotels and the ski resort drive the economy.
Magic Mountain Ski Area is a destination for all levels of skiers in the Northeastern US. It offers classes for beginners and black diamond trails and wooded trails for experienced skiers. Londonderry offers nature trail hiking opportunities. Lowell Lake Trail in Lowell Lake State Park is a loop approximately 3.5 miles in length, which completely encircles Lowell Lake. Trail highlights include a Revolutionary War-era cemetery, stands of large white pine trees, and scenic views of the lake and wetlands. The trail is located on relatively flat terrain and the hike is of moderate difficulty. The trail is marked with blue paint blazes. During your stay in one of the Londonderry VT inns or hotels, look up the Vermont farm stands and Vermont cheese makers in the area. |
