Barre, VT (pop. 9,200), located in Washington County, is the 4th largest city in Vermont. Each January, Barre is home to the Vermont Farm Show, a featured event on the Vermont country fair calendar. More importantly, Barre, named after American Revolutionary Isaac Barre, is the Granite Center of the Universe. “Barre Gray,” with a fine grain, smooth texture, and water resistant quality, is the marble of choice for outdoor sculpture. Granite deposits at Millstone Hill were discovered ca. 1815, and a granite boom developed as soon as a railroad line came to town. Barre is located 3 hours to Boston, 6 hours to New York City, 3 hours to Montreal, 3 plus hours to Albany, and 3 hours to Hartford International Airport. For this reason, Barre attracted an immigrant population of stonemasons and craftsmen from Europe and Canada. As a result, Barre became the state's most diverse municipality and an incubator for a radical, anarchist and socialist labor movement.
The Wobblies and the Socialists had a strong presence in Barre. The Socialist Labor Party Hall and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Barre, Vermont attractions include the Vermont Granite Museum, the Barre Museum and The Barre Opera House. |
