Barnard received its charter in 1761 and grew as a farm town. Sheep farms replaced the early homesteads during the 19th century, and Barnard became a center for dairy operations. Today, visitors to the town enjoy its state park, its historic General Store, and most of all the New England charm of its picturesque village center.

Silver Lake State Park offers a sandy swimming area, picnic grounds, and a camping area. Its proximity to Woodstock and other central Vermont tourist destinations makes it ideal for family vacations. Silver Lake State Park was established in 1955. Silver Lake fishing -- northern pike, perch, smallmouth bass – is excellent. The lake is a quiet spot, and you will find mostly canoes and rowboats, with an occasional motorboat. The park is closed officially in winter, but it is still a popular place for ice skating and ice fishing. The park was once part of several farms, and you can see the remains of a barn foundation in the park’s campground.
