New Haven VT (pop. 1,666) in Addison County includes the villages of Belden Falls, Brooksville, and New Haven Mills. Approximate driving time to New Haven VT from Montreal is about 3 hours … from Boston, 4 hours … from New York City, 6 hours … from Bradley International Airport (Hartford), 4 hours and from Burlington International Airport, 1 hour. New Haven is a sweet 15 minute drive into Middlebury VT. When I think of New Haven, Vermont, I think also of Trout Fishing in America, the exceptional and unique novel Richard Brautigan published in 1967, the real summer of love. It could be because, if you’re a trout fisherman or fisherwoman, Belden Falls might be the kind of destination you’re looking for … a quiet undisturbed New England cranny in an otherwise turbulent stream. It could also be because, in the novel Trout Fishing in America, there’s a hotel by that name. Brautigan wrote most of the book on a camping trip six years before it found a publisher. There’s a little country hotel in New Haven. In any case, there’s good fishing in New Haven and good food, too. New Haven is also home to the Addison County Fair, which takes place each August. The fair is the biggest farm festival in the Lake Champlain Valley region, and it bills itself as the largest agricultural event in Vermont. |
In any case, the fair is a wonderful end of summer event. As you might expect, things worth finding in a country village like New Haven could include maple products. See if you can find Red Tail Ridge Sugarworks, which specializes in small batch hand-crafted Vermont syrup. Look for free-range poultry farms and, if you like croutons, ask around for Olivia. New Haven Mills is home to the 1851 Union Church of New Haven Mills. You can find it at the crossroads of what was once a thriving mill village. This photogenic Greek Revival church is set at the top of a knoll overlooking the New Haven River. The Brooksville Advent Church, listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is worth a look … a plain, beautiful New England church. These historic New England churches, these fine undecorated houses of worship, are reminders of the spirit that moved William Bradford and his saints to board the Mayflower and set off for an unknown world … monuments to the soul of colonial New England. |
